Asian Noodles

Asian Noodles

There are many different types of Asian noodles. They are flavorful and easy to cook, making a great addition to any dinner.

There are wheat noodles, such as udon, somen, and somyeon. Egg and alkalized noodles are another category containing noodles such as ramen, hokkien, and yi mian. Other popular Asian noodles are the buckwheat noodle, such as soba, or rice noodles like chow fun. There are also starch-based noodles like harusame.

Unlike Italian pasta, Asian noodles may be cooked to a variety of different textures, depending on the noodle someone is working with.

Application and Uses

Each Asian country has its own noodles specific to national dishes, but there are also commonplace uses. For example, wheat noodles are often used in hot soup or stir-fry.

Some noodles are even pan-fried instead of boiled. The noodles that are boiled often take far less time than Italian noodles: anywhere from three to eight minutes, depending on the noodle.

One popular noodle, ramen, shows a wide range of usage. Ramen can be boiled in hot soup, but it can also be served ‘raw’ in salad.

Features and Benefits

As with other noodles, Asian noodles have a differing amount of nutrition, but perhaps the most notable is rice noodles. These noodles are made without eggs or gluten, which can help those with food allergies, a major selling point.
