Taro Chips

Taro Chips

Taro is a root vegetable that grows in tropical and subtropical regions and has been a staple in cultures from Africa to Hawaii more or less forever. Recently, taro has become popular in more temperate countries, including the United States in a number of different forms, including as an alternative to potato chips.

Taro chips are a creamy-white color with little, wavy purple lines, almost as though purple thread had been mixed into the flesh somehow. The flavor and texture is similar to that of potato, but just different enough to be interesting, and the purple lines add visual appeal.

Application and Uses

Taro chips can be served as a snack or a side in place of potato chips, or they can be served mixed with chips made from potato, sweet potato, and other starchy roots. While taro chips are sold in bags, just like potato chips (mixed or on their own), they are also easy to make from scratch. Stores selling whole taro root can include chip recipes as a serving suggestion for the possibly unfamiliar vegetable.

Features and Benefits

Nutritionally, taro and potato chips are very similar. Both are high in fat, but that’s only because they’re both fried. Both are good sources of several nutrients (manganese, vitamins E and B6, and fiber, for taro). The main reason to serve taro chips is novelty—and the subtly different taste.
