General Description

The avocado fruit comes from an evergreen tree with oval or elliptical leaves that occur in spirals on the tree. There are different varieties of avocado, so the skin can range from green to purple and bumpy to smooth.

Avocados are best grown in subtropical or tropical climates, although it is possible to grow them in cooler areas, as well. Warm, spring soil is perfect for planting avocado trees.

This fruit is an excellent source of monounsaturated fat and is typically found in Mexican dishes such as guacamole. People love to eat it as a fresh fruit or use it as an ingredient in other dishes. Avocado is great on salads or as a mayonnaise substitute.

This fruit can also be featured in desserts or drinks. This is more popular in Asia but can also be seen in the United States, as avocados are a major part of the fitness movement.

Avocados are high in many different vitamins, including vitamins K, B5, B6, and C. Potassium and folate are also present in large quantities. In fact, an avocado contains more potassium than a banana. This heart-friendly food can lower triglyceride levels and cholesterol.

Avocados are rich in anti-oxidants and fiber. They are also known for their great assistance with weight loss. This is an all-star food.
